Similar is not the Same

You may have opened up the paper this morning and read a news article about how Obama may get his Blackberry, or something like it, but what the articles don’t mention is what would really be different. There’s about 2 or 3 “NSA Approved” ’smart phones’ that while containing similar features to a blackberry it’s not. It’s kinda like someone telling you a brick phone does everything you want when what you really want is color, there’s absolutely no confirmation on what kind of phone the president may get to use.

The problem is that Ambinder (and the mainstream media) doesn’t seem to know the difference between some NSA smartphone and an actual RIM BlackBerry… and there’s a big difference.

The biggest problem they’re having is that the current blackberry can only classify messages up to secret, and don’t allow you to customize something beyond that. I’m curious if the fact that the blackberry is owned by a Canadian company is what’s holding him up from getting some kind of custom job like he did with his vehicle. I’m sure there’s also a long history of the tank, Clinton wasn’t really around for the mobile phone revolution and well…W is still trying to figure out rotary.

The only other relevant tech news is pretty obvious, the ‘blowout liquidation‘ of Circuit City is anything but. You’re more than likely to still pay full price, which would still be about double the internet price, and you don’t have a return policy on it.

6. (And this is more of a rant:) Don’t act happy that we are going out of business, please. I have had more than a few qualms with my job and the company the past few years, trust me. But I am still sad to see it go. I helped out a lot of very nice people, and I genuinely believe I helped them out and went above and beyond for them. I may be the exception, but I helped as much as I could and didn’t sell people things that I didn’t think they could use. Part of what is so depressing about working there right now is how smug people seem to be about us closing. You don’t think the price on that camera is good? Neither do I, and I am sorry that I and 34,000 other people losing their jobs could not have saved you 12 more dollars on a camera. See how much better it gets in 6 months when Best Buy is the ONLY option for that TV you are looking for.

Capitalism is pathetic no?
