Unemployment Can’t Stop Movin

626,000 unemployment claims last week, and it’s expected to get worse. So far so good at my job but damn that’s toxic. I feel like I shouldn’t go look for a better job because there’s millions of people fighting to the death over the few spots that may be open at some places. It would be close to impossible to start a business (unless someone wants to loan me 300 grand to start a Jimmy Johns), several of which I know would flourish in this economy and crime rates are through the roof.

Companies are also looking for anyway to cut cost, and the majority of them all start at labor. Cutting benefits for new workers, wages, what defense do we have against this? Nothing, we have to sit back and accept getting paid half as much as our parents for doing, what many believe the younger generation does, more work. 8 years of the most pro-business president and we’re faced with working harder for less, I can’t believe anyone is taking the lying down, it’s been illegal in this country to pay people less because of race and gender, age is always overlooked.

I was happy to hear on NPR today a real business owner who said this myth that cutting taxes will help him hire more workers is complete horse shit. If his business picks up the tax rate could be 50%, he’s going to hire a new worker when he needs more work done and not when the government gives him a handout. As well they compared how countries with higher tax rates have more wealth and less poverty. How in our 2,500 year history as a species we’ve had a progressive tax system in every single economy because of how well it moves the entire country forward, providing more opportunity to everyone so we rise as one nation. That what the last 8 years has done is create a well defined rich and poor class, and with all the ‘middle-class’ people losing their jobs we may not have a middle class by the end of next month yet still have thousands of people getting paid a few million dollars a year to tell us all to get lost.

There’s a fundamental problem with it all, for starters labor overseas is far cheaper, and you can beat the shit out of employees that want breaks! It’s also no longer relevant in our society to expect 150 million people to work 8 hours a day. There’s simply not enough work in the country anymore, maybe this stimulus thing will help but even that kind of network won’t makeup for the amount of jobs we’re losing. So umm…happy almost Friday. :D
